Portland Area Thinking Schools TGITh - Thursday, Nov. 6

Dear Portland Area Rethinking Schools Friends,

When we take a close look at the school or schools we know best, how well are they providing the kind of education that all students deserve? How can we use our observations and experiences to promote more equitable schools? Join us next THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 4 to 6, for a PARS community conversation starting with our "Equity Report Card" as a way to identify the schools' strengths and weaknesses. Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1624 NE Hancock, two blocks north of Broadway.

We will also hear a brief report from those who participated in the recent "Teaching for Social Justice" conference in Seattle.

Northwest Conference on Teaching for Social Justice / October 4

Dear Portland Area Rethinking Schools friends,

This fall will be the first ever Northwest Conference on Teaching for Social Justice -- held in Seattle on Saturday October 4th. I hope you'll make plans to attend. It's sponsored by a number of education social justice groups throughout the region, including Portland Area Rethinking Schools, Puget Sound Rethinking Schools in Seattle, Olympia Educators for Social Justice, as well as Rethinking Schools magazine.

Check out the website for the conference at www.nwtsj.org. The conference is modeled after the annual, and inspirational, Teachers 4 Social Justice conference in San Francisco (this year held the following weekend at Mission High School -- see www.t4sj.org.) This will be a chance to meet other teachers, student teachers, teacher educators, and parent activists who see their work as part of a broader education for social justice project. There will be excellent workshops, discussions, and displays of social justice teaching materials. We'll send out more details as the conference approaches, but please put this on your calendar and make plans to try to attend.

In fact, it may not be too late to propose a workshop. More details are at the www.nwtsj.org website. Feel free to email me at bbpdx@aol.com with any questions or workshop ideas.

Have a good rest of the summer. Our first TGIF of the year is planned for September 19th -- a forum on the Bill Sizemore-sponsored anti-ESOL/Bilingual Ed. Measure 58. Details to follow.

Portland Area Rethinking Schools has a 30+ year history of working to support public education and progressive reform in the schools. We are teachers, parents, students, community activists and teacher educators who believe excellent and equitable public schools are essential for all students to reach their potential and for the creation of a just and democratic society.
