Labor History Conference in Portland

in

Dear Portland Area Rethinking Schools friends,

The Pacific Northwest Labor History Association will have a special session geared to teachers and teacher union activists at its annual conference this May 20-22 in Portland. (https://pnlha.wordpress.com/) Representatives from the California Federation of Teachers and the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation will join to present their work on internal union education and public outreach in labor history.

The BCTF will debut their Online Museum celebrating the union's 100th anniversary. Some of the museum’s “rooms” include “Building Our Profession,” Bargaining,” and “Social Justice.”

Moira Mackenzie is the Executive Director of the BC Teachers' Federation. She has taught at the elementary grades and in special education, has served as a local president and as a member of the BCTF Executive Committee.

Nancy Knickerbocker is the BCTF’s Director of the Communications and Campaigns. She has been a journalist and worked as communications director for Education International, the global organization of teacher unions.

Larry Kuehn is Director of Research and Technology at the BCTF. He taught in secondary schools, has been a local president and served as the president of the BCTF during the historic Operation Solidarity strikes of 1983.

Drawing partly on the statewide Labor In the Schools programs he’s mentored, Fred Glass will address “Creating a Usable State Labor History.” Fred is Communications Director of the California Federation of Teachers and teaches in the Labor and Community Studies Department at City College of San Francisco. He wrote and directed Golden Lands, Working Hands, a ten part video series on the history of the California Labor Movement. His book on the same topic, From Mission to Microchip, will be published by the University of California Press in June 2016.

The conference will have a strong environmental focus and will include other workshops and presentations of interest to teachers. See the full program at https://pnlha.wordpress.com/. For further information, contact Norm Diamond, norm@lclark.edu.
