Support PPS Climate Justice Resolution, Tuesday

Dear Portland Area Rethinking Schools friends,

Please join other concerned teachers, parents, students, and community activists on Tuesday May 17th at the school board meeting at Madison High School (2735 NE 82nd) -- 7 pm to 9 pm. We are urging the school board to adopt a resolution that calls for Portland Public Schools to take a more affirmative and comprehensive approach to the climate crisis. PLEASE WEAR RED IN SOLIDARITY. If you can, meet at 7 pm at the turnaround in front of the main entrance, so we can enter together.

From the introduction to the resolution:

At a time when the science of global warming has prompted governments around the world to begin redefining our economies and to call for an end to the fossil fuel era, it is time for school districts to redefine what it means to educate students for a future of certain climate change. Climate literacy is essential for the success of Portland Public Schools students, both as members of their communities and citizens of the world.

Supporters of the resolution include 350PDX, Portland Rising Tide, the Sierra Club, Columbia Riverkeeper, APANO, Rethinking Schools, and about 30 other community and social/environmental justice organizations.

(Because the school board has a budget hearing immediately prior to the school board meeting we are not sure exactly when the resolution will be presented and discussed. So times are approximate.)
