Northwest Conference on Teaching for Social Justice / October 4

in
Dear Portland Area Rethinking Schools friends,

This fall will be the first ever Northwest Conference on Teaching for Social Justice -- held in Seattle on Saturday October 4th. I hope you'll make plans to attend. It's sponsored by a number of education social justice groups throughout the region, including Portland Area Rethinking Schools, Puget Sound Rethinking Schools in Seattle, Olympia Educators for Social Justice, as well as Rethinking Schools magazine.

Check out the website for the conference at www.nwtsj.org. The conference is modeled after the annual, and inspirational, Teachers 4 Social Justice conference in San Francisco (this year held the following weekend at Mission High School -- see www.t4sj.org.) This will be a chance to meet other teachers, student teachers, teacher educators, and parent activists who see their work as part of a broader education for social justice project. There will be excellent workshops, discussions, and displays of social justice teaching materials. We'll send out more details as the conference approaches, but please put this on your calendar and make plans to try to attend.

In fact, it may not be too late to propose a workshop. More details are at the www.nwtsj.org website. Feel free to email me at bbpdx@aol.com with any questions or workshop ideas.

Have a good rest of the summer. Our first TGIF of the year is planned for September 19th -- a forum on the Bill Sizemore-sponsored anti-ESOL/Bilingual Ed. Measure 58. Details to follow.

Best,

Bill Bigelow

PARS Site is Live!

Steering Committee,

I've moved our site to a new host server (ICDSoft.com instead of Stephouse.net).

This will allow bulk email to be sent to our list from the site; it's cheaper, and has better management features.  I also changed the DNS for our domain name to "point to" the ICD server instead of Stephouse. This required changing some code, and I got help from Kyle on parts of it.

The site is live, so anyone can view it. I've made some changes to reflect the SC meeting yesterday afternoon (tiny as it was), and will do more work over the next few days.

I'll be sending another email inviting you to register for a unique account. In the meantime, you can access material for the SC that is not available to the general
public by going to: <http://www.portlandrethinkingschools.org/user>

To see this email displayed as a page on our website, log in as "scmembers" as above, and go to <http://www.portlandrethinkingschools.org/newsletter/pars-site-live>
